A plastic model of the American Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat fighter aircraft, to be assembled and painted, in 1/72 scale, including decals for the canopies. The kit does not include glue or paint.
Paint and Marking Variations:
- Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat BuNo 1850, 41-F-4, VF-41, USS Ranger (CV-4), 1940 – one of the first production Wildcats. Aircraft No. 4 was the lead aircraft of the second, "white" section of the squadron, so the engine cowling ring, fuselage stripe, and wing chevrons were white with thin black outlines. The green tail indicated assignment to the aircraft carrier USS Ranger. Factory photos show the earlier, transitional code 4-F-4 – VF-4 was being redesignated VF-41, and the number "1" was added to the designation later.
- Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat BuNo 1880, 72-F-16, VF-72, USS Wasp (CV-7), 1940–1941 – the lead aircraft of the squadron's sixth, "yellow" section. A yellow cowling ring, fuselage stripe, and wing chevrons distinguished the section leader, while the black tailplane indicated its assignment to USS Wasp. The aircraft bore full VF-72 markings, including the distinctive squadron emblem. Photographs of VF-72 aircraft from this period also show telescopic sights extending through the windbreak.
The Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat entered service with the US Navy at a time when the US carrier-based aircraft still sported some of the most striking livery in its history. Set 70091 depicts early production Wildcats with yellow wings, colored tails, and colored section markings.
